Plants Drinking Water

Today's Weather: Heavy rain

Today's Activity: Since we can't go outside today, here's a rainy day activity to get children thinking about spring. This was a favorite of mine to do with my mom when I was a kid. Take a piece of celery and cut off the bottom end. Take a glass of water and add a dark colored food dye. stick the celery in and over the next couple of hours keep returning to the project to watch how the dye moves up the celery stalk. Discuss that this is how plants and trees "drink" water. See http://www.ed.gov/pubs/parents/Science/celery.html
